With the final trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes – the last instalment of the prequel trilogy – dropping overnight, everything’s building up to the events of 1968’s original Planet of the Apes. Most know what happened there, but what more can we glean about the journey from this latest glimpse?
We will fight them on the treetops!
Tensions remain at a high between the two species, with the rift caused by Koba and Carver in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes having fuelled the fight. Despite Caesar’s attempts to bring peace and find a new home for his kind, the battle against the humans hits the forests. It’s the natural territory of the apes, so surely it will be a great tactical advantage?
“Who is the child?”
Who is this mystery kid that Caesar’s posse discover? OK, so Apes fans will have a clue, but with them taking her in rather than leaving her to die, is this a seed of hope for ape/human relations? Or is it a nod to Logan's feisty human-girl-child alliance?
“We will bring an end to their kind!”
With a vast army led by Woody Harrelson, going bananas as the brutal Colonel (no chicken here, folks), the apes have a formidable enemy to face. This guy seriously despises apekind, declaring all-out war upon them at whatever cost. Of course we know what happens next, but hopefully the journey there will be explosive (literally and figuratively) enough to be worthwhile.
“Apes fight only to survive”
It seems that some apes didn’t get this memo, but then with the Colonel bringing such a full-on fight, we guess they really do have to retaliate just to stay alive. Monkeys with machine guns is a thing. Eep!
This is it!
Looking somewhat akin to a classic war flick, it seems that while some key emotional drama is still to play out, all-out action takes a front seat. After all, the future of the planet is at stake here!
We’ve known for a while that the WETA folk are brilliant at making a monkey out of Andy Serkis. But the level of emotional detail they can now deliver is startling – and more than a little unsettling. Meanwhile, just look at all of the snow interaction – and how many apes are out there!
