Review: Popstar – Never Stop Never Stopping

Release date: 12 October
Format: gformat-dvd gformat-bluray

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Starring: Andy Samberg, Avika Schaffer, Sarah Silverman

Wickedly skewering the fascination the current crop of teen idols seem to have for grandiose documentary concert films, Popstar is a hilarious mockumentary from the Lonely Island gang that charts a year in the life of Conner4Real (Andy Samberg). Once a member of pop-rap trio Style Boyz – with Jorman Taccone and Avika Schaffer, who also direct – Conner’s first solo record made him a global superstar, but things start going downhill rapidly with the release of a disastrous follow-up and national tour.

As with the best music spoofs, the songs sound pretty authentic until you listen to the splendidly filthy and politically incorrect lyrics (his 'love' song Bin Laden boasts lines like “f**k me like we f***d Bin Laden”) and the trio are well supported by a seriously starry supporting cast: as well as cameos from pals like Maya Rudolph, Justin Timberlake and Bill Hader, superstars such as Pink, Mariah Carey, Ringo Starr, Simon Cowell and Pharrell Williams also appear as themselves. The scene in which R&B crooner Seal is savaged by a pack of wolves during an elaborate wedding proposal from Conner to his actress girlfriend (Imogen Poots) is worth the price of the DVD alone. Essential viewing for Spinal Tap-pers.
